- AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the work of getting your business named in the answers from ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity and voice assistants.
- It matters now because AI answers are taking the clicks that used to go to the top Google results, and both OpenAI and Google have started selling ads around those answers.
- Ads sit next to the answer. The answer itself, and which companies it names, still has to be earned.
- AI tools trust what they can confirm in many places: a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews, the same details on every directory, and pages that answer real questions plainly.
- Good SEO is still the foundation. AEO builds on it so your business is the one the AI is confident enough to recommend.
What AEO means
Search engine optimization (SEO) is about ranking in a list of ten blue links. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is about being part of the answer. When someone asks ChatGPT "who's a good roofer near me that handles insurance claims?" or Google shows an AI Overview at the top of the results, the tool writes a short answer and usually names only a handful of businesses. AEO is the work of making sure yours is one of them.
You will also see it called GEO (generative engine optimization) or AI search optimization. The names are new; the goal is the same. An answer engine is any tool that replies with an answer instead of a list: ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, and voice assistants like Siri and Alexa.
Why it matters now, not someday
AI answers are where people start
These tools are no longer a niche. OpenAI said in October 2025 that ChatGPT had more than 800 million weekly users. Google says AI Overviews reach more than 2 billion people a month, and that AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in 2026. For a growing share of homeowners, the first answer they see about a local service is written by an AI.
The answer is taking the clicks
When an AI summary answers the question, fewer people click through to websites. Pew Research Center tracked real browsing by U.S. adults in 2025 and found people clicked a regular search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% when it did not. Only about 1% clicked a link inside the summary itself. Seer Interactive, studying its clients' searches, found organic click-through on queries with an AI Overview fell from 1.76% to 0.61%.
The numbers vary by study, but they point the same way. Ranking on page one is worth less when an AI answer sits above it. Being named inside that answer is worth more.
Ten blue links gave ten businesses a chance. An AI answer usually gives a few.
Ads have arrived next to the answers
In early 2026 OpenAI began showing ads in ChatGPT in the U.S. for users on its Free and Go plans. They appear as labeled sponsored cards below the answer, and OpenAI has since expanded them to more countries. Google already places ads inside AI Overviews through existing Search and Performance Max campaigns, and it is testing new ad formats in AI Mode.
Two things follow for a local business. First, the space around AI answers is becoming paid real estate, just as the top of Google's results did years ago, and early movers will set the price. Second, OpenAI says ads do not influence what ChatGPT's answer says. The paid card sits under the answer; it does not buy you a mention in it. That makes the earned answer more valuable, not less.
Usage and click figures: OpenAI (October 2025), Google (2025 and Q2 2026 remarks), Pew Research Center (July 2025), Seer Interactive (2025). Ad formats change quickly; this reflects what each company had announced as of October 2026.
How AI tools decide who to recommend
An AI tool does not have a secret list of good contractors. It pulls from what it can find and check, then names the businesses it is most confident about. For a local service, that confidence comes from a few places:
- Your business listings. Google Business Profile matters most for Google's AI. Bing Places feeds Copilot and is one of the sources behind ChatGPT search, and Apple Business Connect feeds Siri and Apple Maps. The category, services, service area and hours need to be complete and correct.
- Agreement across the web. When your name, phone, hours and services match on your website, your listings, Yelp, the BBB, Angi, Nextdoor and your local chamber, the AI can confirm you are real and current. Mismatches make it hedge.
- Reviews, and what they say. AI answers often repeat what reviewers mention, like "fast emergency service" or "great with insurance claims." Steady recent reviews that describe the job carry more weight than a high star count alone.
- Pages that answer real questions. A page that says plainly what you do, where, for whom and roughly what it costs is easy for an AI to quote. Vague slogans give it nothing to work with.
- Structure it can read. Schema markup tells machines your business type, services, area and FAQs in a format they don't have to guess at.
An AEO checklist for home service businesses
None of this is exotic. Most of it is good local SEO done thoroughly, with an eye on how an AI reads it. In the order we would tackle it:
1. Fix the foundation
- Fill in every field of your Google Business Profile: primary and secondary categories, each service, service areas, hours, photos and a plain description.
- Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Many local businesses never do, and they feed the AI tools Google doesn't.
- Make your business name, phone number and hours identical everywhere they appear.
2. Write pages that answer the questions people ask AI
- One page per service, and one per town you actually serve, each with its own useful details.
- Lead with the answer. "Yes, we repair all major furnace brands in Summerville, usually the same day" beats three paragraphs of introduction.
- Add an FAQ to each page using the exact questions customers ask on the phone, including price ranges where you can give them.
- Publish helpful posts, like this one, on the questions homeowners type into ChatGPT.
3. Make it easy for machines to read
- Add LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ schema to your site.
- Keep your site fast and readable on a phone. AI crawlers and people both give up on slow pages.
- Publish an llms.txt file, a plain summary of your business and key pages written for AI tools. It costs nothing and is quickly becoming a standard.
4. Earn the mentions AI trusts
- Ask every happy customer for a review by text, with a direct link, and reply to every review.
- Get listed on the directories and associations in your trade and town.
- Look for local mentions: sponsorships, community pages, supplier "find an installer" pages and local news.
5. Check what the AI says about you
Once a month, ask ChatGPT, Google and Perplexity the questions your customers would ask, like "best AC repair in [your town]" or "who installs metal roofs near [your town]?" Note who gets named and what the AI says about each company. In Google Analytics, watch for visitors arriving from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. That traffic is small today for most local businesses, but it is the trend line that matters.
Should you buy ads in AI answers?
Maybe later, but not first. AI ad programs are new, their reporting is thin, and for local services the formats are still settling. An ad also does nothing to fix an AI answer that describes your business poorly or leaves you out. Build the foundation first, because it makes every channel work better, including any ads you buy later. Once your listings, reviews and pages are solid, a small test budget in Google's AI placements or ChatGPT ads is a reasonable experiment.
What this looks like in practice
At LiveFlo this is the same groundwork as our local SEO work: a fast site with a page for every service and town, structured data on every page, a complete Google Business Profile, matching directory listings and a review request after every job. We followed this playbook for PaintSmart, a painting company serving Columbia and Summerville, SC. Their site now has 30 pages covering 11 towns, with FAQ and business schema and an llms.txt file, and their Google profile holds a 5.0 rating across 32 reviews.
The free audit compares your Google listing, reviews and website with three local competitors, the same signals AI tools rely on. No sales call needed.
